Gagging for a Pint

Weird thing.  When we got to the end of our last trip to Bristol I was really ready to come back down south, tinker in the garden, light a fire in the evenings, and generally cosy down (the flat, whilst easier to keep warm, is brilliant but definitely not 'cosy') in the house with a decent kitchen etc, etc.

In my head I was perfectly happy to leave the city of beer well behind for a while and it didn't feel at all like any sort of compromise.

True enough, the first thing I did on landing in Eastbourne was order in a load of cans from our favourite south-west breweries for the days we didn't venture to the pub.

Our local pubs responded well to our return (yeah, we know it was very much accidental) and had really interesting guests at The Crown, and good seasonal beer (Bonfire Boy) at the Lamb.  We have also settled into both of them as decent places to play games (on the right day).

And yet, here I am now about six weeks later pawing at the ground to go to The Barleymow and have two cask beers and (probably) a stronger keg beer whilst playing a game or reviewing a funding bid (of which there are many we have to do).  We've been doing this back-and-forward living things for about 10 years now and every time I think it's maybe getting a bit old - something keeps me thinking it's the best of all possible worlds in terms of facilities, pubs, being useful and yet getting a bit of variety.

It's not a long stay this time - we'll be back after about 2 weeks, the trip being bookended by a few obligations at both ends - but getting a good fix of brilliant beer in that time, whilst also catching up with friends and family feels like the perfect getaway (even if there still funding bids to do)
